Deputy State Fire Marshals perform periodic inspections of existing public buildings to verify compliance with 815 KAR 10:060, also known as the Kentucky Standards of Safety. These inspections ensure that safety features such as means of egress, fire alarms, sprinkler systems and other necessary equipment are maintained in satisfactory condition. Deputy State Fire Marshals meet with property owners and occupants to achieve any necessary corrections. Currently the Division of Fire Prevention uses the 2018 NFPA 1 (National Fire Protection Association) “Fire Prevention Code," as well as the 2018 NFPA 101 “Life Safety Code” to inspect existing buildings.
Deputy State Fire Marshals provide fire safety education to business owners and organizations who request programs.
Deputy State Fire Marshals also perform or assist with fire investigations to determine the cause and origin of a fire, assist law enforcement personnel and may examine fire incidents that result in injuries or loss of life. They also perform life safety evaluations after fires to help identify problems and possible solutions to prevent further incidents.
