General Inspection performs inspections of existing public buildings for compliance with state fire/life safety codes. These inspections ensure that safety features such as means of egress, fire alarms, sprinkler systems and other necessary equipment are maintained in satisfactory condition. Inspectors meet with property owners and occupants to achieve the necessary corrections. Currently the Division of Fire Prevention uses the 2012 NFPA 1 (National Fire Protection Association) “Fire Prevention Code," as well as the 2012 NFPA 101 “Life Safety Code” to inspect existing buildings.
General inspectors provide training to those who request programs.
General inspectors perform or assist with fire investigations to determine cause and origin, assist law enforcement personnel and may examine fire incidents that result in fatalities. They also perform life safety evaluations after fires to help identify problems and possible solutions to prevent further incidents.
